The Victorian Society for Computers and the Law invites you to a discussion on net neutrality, the principle that all online traffic should be treated equally. Net neutrality and open internet initiatives often liken the internet to a public utility which should be open for all to access, unlike a private toll road system, which favours or blocks particular types of traffic.

Our discussion will be led by Matt Healey, National Executive – Industry & Policy at Macquarie Telecom. Matt has worked in corporate law and compliance positions across the energy and airline industries. He was also Director – Enforcement at the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), managing teams overseeing the regulation of the Australian telecommunications sector and is currently the chair of the Competitive Carriers’ Coalition and a director of Communications Alliance, the communications sector’s peak industry association.

This discussion session will focus on net neutrality issues in the Australian telco context and contrast these issues to the US, where net neutrality rules are facing repeal, and India, where regulators appear to be laying the groundwork for greater net neutrality protections.
