Who are we...
The Victorian Society of Computers and the Law (VSCL) is an association of legal professionals with a practice or interest in information technology issues and technology professionals involved in or interested in legal matters.
The VSCL presents monthly seminars and occasional conferences and events on a wide variety of topics, drawing on high caliber speakers and presenters from the legal profession, IT industry and academia.
In addition, the VSCL has a dynamic Practice and Procedures Focus Group which coordinates and in many cases leads the development of new standards for the use of information technology in the legal profession and by Courts.
VSCL has joined together with the University of Melbourne and RMIT to undertake this task to develop search technology that meets the needs of lawyers to engage in effective discovery in digital document collections with a goal to set a benchmark in the profession for what works and what does not.

A unique opportunity for real world legal experience that will greatly support any Articles, Summer or Winter Clerk application or an application for part-time work as a paralegal while you finish your studies.
This is your chance to assist with industry leading research.
What we give you

• Training in objective and subjective document coding and review, particularly relevant to the discovery process as it pertains to commercial litigation and regulatory investigations which will be carried out in person or via the web.
• Exposure to, and training in, the latest document review software and technology.
• An appreciation of paralegal type work.
• Skills and knowledge relevant for any student undertaking legal studies.
What we want from you
• A time commitment of 8 hours over a 4 week period to undertake document coding in our fully equipped facilities or from home/office/chambers.
Why
• We need your services to contribute to new research into document coding and review technologies as part of a TREC project and with a the final output to be a benchmark for the profession and the Judiciary on effective use of technology in the discovery of electronic material in civil litigation matters.
Who are TREC?
The Text REtrieval Conference (TREC), co-sponsored by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and U.S. Department of Defense, was started in 1992 as part of the TIPSTER Text program. Its purpose is to support research within the information retrieval community by providing the infrastructure necessary for large-scale evaluation of text retrieval methodologies. In particular, the TREC workshop series has the following goals:
• to encourage research in information retrieval based on large test collections;
• to increase communication among industry, academia, and government by creating an open forum for the exchange of research ideas;
• to speed the transfer of technology from research labs into commercial products by demonstrating substantial improvements in retrieval methodologies on real-world problems; and
• to increase the availability of appropriate evaluation techniques for use by industry and academia, including development of new evaluation techniques more applicable to current systems.
TREC Legal Track
The goal of the legal track is to develop search technology that meets the needs of lawyers to engage in effective discovery in digital document collections.
